Abstract Macro photograph of Peacock Feathers

I love patterns and use them in many of my original paintings. I had taken several pictures of peacocks at the Philadelphia zoo and used them as inspiration for several paintings. In most cases, the tail feathers are often used as inspiration for artwork. But, I was intrigued by the patterns and colors on the body of the peacock. The gorgeous blues and greens on top and the black and white details on the bottom of the main body of the bird.

This is a macro image of a section of the feathers that I turned into a 'wearable art' glass tile pendant.

Please see my etsy store for original paintings, framed prints, framed ceramic tiles and handcrafted jewelry.

Enchanted Garden Bird Watchers

I love this bright, whimsical painting. This is a recent addition to my 'enchanted garden' series of folk art paintings. The original painting has already sold, but I do have prints available up to size 16x20.

I recently introduced a 'wearable' form of the image with this cute art glass pendant. These can be worn on a variety of chains, cords and neckwires. It can also be displayed on a keychain or zipper pull.

Our Lady Liberty - Art Deco Cubist Painting inspired by September 11th

"Our Lady Liberty" is an art deco cubist painting that I originally created shortly after September 11th, 2001. It shows the statue of liberty with buildings and sections of the American flag in the background. I think the painting captures the initial 'shattered' feeling that may of us had after seeing and hearing about the events of 9-11, but the image of lady liberty and the colors still provide a sense of optimism of the future.

This image is available in as a poster or canvas print. Also available as a giclee print. Additional framed prints in 14x17 or 11x13 are available in my etsy shop.

Today, I listed a new art glass pendant featuring "Our Lady Liberty" Additional pendants can be found in my shop.

Rustic Tree Trio - On exhibit at the Comcast center

"Rustic Tree Trio" is a relatively new painting which I made in January 2009. It was recently on exhibition at the Straube Art Center in Pennington, New Jersey and was just made part of an exhibit at the Comcast Center in Philadelphia. The painting is available for sale in my etsy shop. But, there may be a slight delay until I am able to ship it. So, if you are interested in purchasing this piece, please email me first to check on the possible ship date. I'll do my best to get the painting to the buyer as quickly as possible. Until then, if you are in the Philadelphia area, please stop by the Comcast Center to see the painting in person. It is part of a storefront display in the retail section of the building.

Story behind "Nature's Fall Harvest"

As we welcome the early flowers of Spring and clean the yard from fallen twigs and the last leaves from Fall, I thought I'd write a final goodbye to those seasons with a little background story on one of my favorite 'Fall-inspired' designs: Nature's Fall Harvest. (pictured here framed)

This design was originally created for an "Autumn-themed" tshirt graphic. I was limited to 6 colors and I knew I wanted to capture the warm colors of Fall. I love the contrast of the golden yellow with the lavender and sage against the brick and pumpkin orange.

With this design, I wanted to capture the idea of a "living calendar". Shown at the bottom of the design is a calendar base depicting summer's bright yellow sun on the left, snowflakes of winter on the right and Spring's row of flowers on the very bottom. Fall, personified in female form, rises from between summer and winter on the calendar base.

I wanted to depict Fall's landscape in female form like that of Mother Nature. She blooms the fruits and vegetables of Fall including grapes, oranges, avocados, corn and more. The body shape is broken up into various sections of land showing "Nature's Fall Harvest". The femine shape of an avocado runs alongside the left of the Mother Nature image mimicing her shape. Fruit trees and corn stalks grow from 'land segments' on her female form. An oak leaf encircles her head much like a divine crown.

I love this design because of the story behind it and how much can be seen in a relatively simple design shape. This image was originally created as a scalable vector graphic and is available in extremely large mural-sized prints. (up to 60") It is also available in my online boutique on etsy as a framed print (14x17, or 11x13), a framed ceramic tile, a poster, aceo, or you can request a customized size print or pendant.

Thanks for reading about "Nature's Fall Harvest".

Waves and Stones

This is a photograph that I took in the summer of 2008. I originally saw the gorgeous colors and the 'dancing light' on the privacy glass of my studio and wanted to photograph the image to use as inspiration for an abstract painting. Then, I thought the photo itself was so unusual, that I decided to keep it as an original photograph.

It was taken through privacy glass. The sun was very bright that day and it was extremely windy. The combination of wind and light provided for great dancing light on the windows of my studio. When I finally looked at all the images that I had snapped with my camera, this particular image reminded me of water and waves. So, I called it Waves and Stones. A similar image is available which I called 'Water Below'. This and others in the abstract photograph series can be seen in my online boutique on etsy. Additional pieces and sizes are available upon request.

I also just relisted the waves and stone image as a wearable pendant. This is a great way to take the art with you and wear it as a necklace or display it on a keychain.

Story behind the Shakti Energy Goddess Design.

Shakti: Goddess of Energy is a design I created in 2008. I originally created this design as a graphic for a tshirt. It is now available in print form. (Shown here is a framed ceramic tile. )

Here's the story behind the image: (with a little help from Wikipedia)

Shakti is the Hindu Goddess of Energy. I've portrayed her in this design with the 7 Chakras (Energy Centers) of the Body. These 7 chakras are aligned along the vertical axis of the body from the base of the spine to the crown of the head and identify major branchings of the human nervous system. These chakras are believed to be the major points in the body for metaphysical and/or biophysical energy. These energy centers are each symbolized through different colored circles or spheres and different numbers of petals of a lotus flower. The Shakti Goddess is also portrayed in the design with her "Kundalini" - a snake. Kundalini in Sanskrit means snake and it refers to the spiritual energy within every human being that lies 'coiled like a snake' at the base of the spine. It is believed that through meditation, this snake is awakened and moves through the seven chakras, unleashing energy as it passes, and culminates at the crown of the head where spiritual knowledge and power are achieved.

If you look closely, you'll see the snakeskin design starting on the lower half of Shakti's body. The snakeskin pattern continues in the center of the design, passing through the chakras. The snake design then reaches the top and encompasses the head and the 7th chakra unleashing the spiritual enlightment illustrated by the large sunburst behind the image.

Hope you enjoyed a little insight to the story behind the image. -kristen

New 40x30 Minimalist landscape - Sunshine Horizon Glow

Newest Minimalist Landscape Painting "Sunshine Horizon Glow" just finished. It's cold and damp in Philadelphia today, but the painting that I just finished has a nice sunshine and warmth to it. So, despite the bad weather, this painting cheers me up. Warm and rustic with several layers of color. The dominant colors are olive and khaki green, golden yellow, white, brown and red. Although no actual green paint was used in the painting, it appears as such due to the layers of blues and yellows used in the piece. Great depth with gentle hazy glow above the horizon. Large painting with peaceful feel to it.

Two New Pendants

Just added two new pendants to my etsy shop. The second one "Spirit of Autumn Fire", done in collaboration with etsy artist Lyse Marion, was a special request by a friend and I loved how it turned out. So, I made a few extras and added them to my etsy shop. I have several clustered trees as pendants, but I didn't yet make a single tree pendant. New Painting added to March Sale - 3 piece Landscape

Newest painting "Sunshine Through the Trees" just added to my etsy shop. This painting was done on three 10x30 stretched canvas. Multi-piece paintings like this are convenient to use above tables, sofas, beds, etc. because they allow for the look of a larger painting by varying the spacing between the panels. The height is 30 inches and the width will be a minimum of 30 inches, but can look like a larger painting by placing more space between the 3 canvas.

This painting is part of my current March sale. See my etsy shop for additional paintings.
